Four metres of rising damp, and a re-skim over artex
A smaller job in a hallway and stairwell. The affected section of wall was treated for rising damp at the source.
The surrounding walls were then re-skimmed straight over the existing artex, which left a flat, smooth finish ready to decorate without scraping the old texture off.
We take on the same work in Batley. There is more on our artex covering page, and photos from more jobs in our projects.
What causes damp in Batley's stone terraces
Batley was built on its mills, and most of the older housing is stone: terraces of coursed local stone put up for mill workers in Carlinghow and Mount Pleasant and along the valley towards Birstall, with larger Victorian houses in Upper Batley. A solid stone wall behaves differently from a brick one, and that changes what a survey looks for.
- Stone walls with a rubble core A stone wall is two faces with loose fill between them. Rain that gets through the outer face can track down inside the wall and show low on the plaster, where it looks like rising damp. Damp meter readings up the wall help tell the two apart.
- Perished mortar beds The original lime mortar weathers out of the joints over a century or more. Open, crumbling beds let driven rain into the wall, and hard cement repointing tends to hold it there. Penetrating damp treatment.
- Run-off from the hillside Much of Batley sits on the valley side, so the ground behind a terrace is often higher than the floor inside and rainwater runs towards the back wall. Low-level damp on a rear or gable wall is often this, and a wall below ground level needs waterproofing, not injection. Basement tanking.
- No damp proof course to begin with Stone terraces of this age were commonly built without one. Where the survey confirms rising damp, the plaster is stripped, a chemical damp proof course injected, a meshed membrane fixed and the wall replastered. Rising damp treatment.
