Our Work

Two walls stripped and membraned below the dado rail

On this job the plaster came off below the dado rail on two walls of the room, back to the brickwork.

A meshed damp proof membrane was then fixed over the brickwork on both walls and cut in around the sockets, ready for replastering.

We take on the same work in Ossett. There is more on our rising damp treatment page, and photos from more jobs in our projects.

Local Housing

Damp in Ossett: a hilltop town of terraces, semis and bungalows

Ossett stands on high ground between the Calder valley and Wakefield. The older stone and brick terraces are close to the town centre and up in Gawthorpe. Much of the rest, out towards South Ossett and Ossett Common, is semi-detached houses and bungalows built from the 1930s onwards. The two kinds of house have little in common when it comes to damp, so the first job on a survey is working out which problem you have.

  • Walls facing the wind A town on a hill gets more wind-driven rain than one in a valley, and a gable end or an end-of-row wall facing the weather takes most of it. Damp from this shows as patches that come and go with wet spells, often well above skirting height. Penetrating damp treatment.
  • Salts left in old plaster In the older solid-walled terraces, years of rising damp carry salts from the ground into the plaster. Those salts draw moisture from the air, so the wall stays damp to the touch even in dry weather. That is why the plaster is stripped before a chemical damp proof course is injected, and a meshed membrane fixed before the wall is replastered. Rising damp treatment.
  • Single-skin kitchens at the back Where a terrace has its original rear kitchen or scullery, the walls are often only half a brick thick. They are cold and let rain through more easily than the main house, so the damp may be penetrating, condensation or both. A professional damp meter helps separate them.
  • Semis and bungalows sealed up tight These houses have cavity walls and a proper damp proof course, so rising damp is less likely. Mould in bedroom corners, behind wardrobes and around windows is usually condensation, made worse by new windows, blocked vents and closed-off chimneys keeping moist air in. Condensation control.
