Full plastering and damp proofing in Birstall
One of our jobs in Birstall was a full plastering and damp proofing project: the damp was treated and the property plastered throughout.
The photo shows a window wall mid-job, with fresh plaster around the window.

Reading the damp in a Birstall house
Birstall is a small town with two quite different kinds of house. Around the Market Place and along Low Lane the houses are older stone terraces and cottages, many with a cellar. Up on the Fieldhead estate they are post-war, with cavity walls. Where the damp shows on the wall, and what shape it takes, usually says which cause to look for first.
- Patches in a pattern across a stone wall A solid stone wall is tied together by long stones that run from the outside face to the inside. When the outer face is soaked, each of these can carry water across, leaving separate damp patches at intervals on the plaster instead of one band along the bottom. Penetrating damp treatment.
- Damp around window openings Stone sills crack and lose their slope, and newer windows fitted into old stone openings depend on a bead of sealant that perishes. Water gets in at the corners and shows on the plaster beside and below the window.
- A cellar with nowhere to breathe A stone cellar is meant to be a little damp, and it stays healthy while air moves through it. Once the grate is covered or the vents are blocked, the damp air sits under the ground floor, the rooms above smell musty and the floor timbers suffer. Musty smells.
- Mould at the cold edges of post-war houses In a cavity-walled house, rising damp is less likely. Black mould above the windows, along the top of an outside wall or in the corner of a bedroom ceiling marks the coldest parts of the structure, where condensation forms first. Condensation control.
